Writer/Copyeditor (Contract), WWF Protecting Whales & Dolphins Initiative

Location: Remote (preference for Australia)**

We are seeking a Writer/Copyeditor — a skilled storyteller and science communicator with a strong grounding in marine biodiversity — to help shape and share our stories, knowledge, and policy insights with various audiences. You’ll work closely with the Initiative Lead and a diverse, distributed team of experts to deliver high-quality, brand-aligned communications and written materials that inspire action and inform global conservation and policy audiences.

About the Initiative:

Launched in 2020, WWF’s Protecting Whales & Dolphins Initiative is a global conservation programme equipping experts, industry, policymakers, and governments with tools to address threats to cetaceans and safeguard our ocean giants for future generations. The Initiative is based out of WWF-Australia and collaborates with WWF national offices and regional programmes worldwide. Our team consists of marine scientists, conservationists, campaigners, communicators, and policy specialists. Our work contributes to WWF Global Biodiversity team.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Writing / Storytelling: Write and produce feature stories highlighting WWF’s conservation work and collaborations with our partners, showcasing solutions and impact through engaging storytelling.

  • Copyediting: Edit and refine policy and issue briefs, FAQs, and fact sheets in WWF brand style, ensuring clarity and accessibility for conservation and policy audiences.

  • Collaboration: Work with the Initiative Lead and liaise with senior communicators across WWF’s Biodiversity Global team to align storytelling with global advocacy, fundraising, and policy objectives.

  • Visibility & Impact: Promote written materials across WWF’s internal and external channels, including social media, ensuring all content is brand-aligned and, where possible, achieves strong media coverage and engagement.

Essential Skills:

  • Proven experience writing and editing for science, conservation, and/or policy audiences.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of marine biodiversity science, conservation, and policy.

  • Excellent writing and storytelling skills with able to translate complex science and policy concepts into clear, accessible, and engaging language.

  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to work remotely across time zones on a flexible schedule.

  • Experience collaborating within large, diverse, and international teams.

Experience within global NGOs or large networks, visual communication production (infographics, video), media relations and basic analytics skills are beneficial skills for this contract role.

Contract, Time & Location:

  • Estimated ~80 days (up to 3 days/week over the contract period), commencing in early January 2026 to June 30, 2026.

  • Up to AUD $40,000 total (incl. GST if applicable).

  • Monthly activity reporting and invoicing.

  • Preference for candidates based in Australia; strong regional candidates are encouraged to apply.

  • Based on performance, opportunity to extend to the next financial year.

Please note, we require the successful candidate to undergo a criminal background check (for their country of citizenship, and anywhere they’ve lived for greater than 12 months in the last 5 years) and to complete an online Partners in Equity and Safeguarding training course that is about 3 hours in duration.
