Contract for part-time, Communications and Knowledge Management Lead

WWF Protecting Whales & Dolphins Initiative

We are advertising for contract a Communications and Knowledge Management Lead for WWF’s Protecting Whales and Dolphins Initiative. We seek someone who has expertise in storytelling, science communication and marine biodiversity knowledge management who can work remotely across multiple time zones with a diverse team with a flexible schedule. The contract entails work up to three days per week for one year.

Background

In 2020, WWF launched the Protecting Whales and Dolphins Initiative – a global conservation program to equip experts, industry, policy makers and governments with tools to respond to these threats and solutions to safeguard our ocean giants for future generations.

The Initiative is based out of WWF-Australia with active participation from national offices and regional programs including the Antarctic, Arctic, Chile, China, Germany, France, Mexico, Netherlands, Pakistan, South Africa, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The team are experts in marine and social science, cetacean conservation, campaigning, communications, and policy development.

The Communication and Knowledge Management Lead will be responsible for following activities and deliverables including:

  • Work with the Initiative lead to co-produce and coordinate knowledge management of cetacean conservation and policy issues across internal and external WWF channels to support communications and advocacy efforts across the WWF Network.

  • Work with the Initiative lead on co-producing and copyediting reports, issues briefs, position papers, FAQs, and fact sheets in WWF brand style, and by doing so make it as easy as possible for our communication, conservation and policy specialists to use.

  • With Initiative lead and team liaising with senior communicators in the WWF Oceans and Biodiversity practice, write and produce stories for targeted WWF communications, fundraising, and advocacy opportunities, promoting them on Initiative communications channels.   • Promote stories and knowledge products across WWF network that is brand-aligned, has adequate media coverage where possible and is appropriately monitored and evaluated using media metrics.

Essential to the role

  • Knowledgeable in marine biodiversity science, conservation and/or policy.

  • Experience in co-producing communications products targeting specific audiences.

  • Although, we are open to candidates regionally, it is preferable the contractor is based in Australia.

Contract

For work to be carried out under the contract, (~100 days, up to AUD$42,000 based on level of experience) including GST if applicable. Activities will be reported on and invoiced monthly, until the end of June 30, 2025. Based on performance, there could be an opportunity to extend to FY26.

Please note, we require the successful candidate to undergo a criminal background check (for their country of citizenship, and anywhere they’ve lived for greater than 12 months in the last 5 years) and to complete an online Partners in Equity and Safeguarding training course that is about 3 hours in duration.
